Much of the work that folklorists produce falls into the category of what has been called “gray literature.” It is hard to find because it was never formally published or intended to be widely distributed.
As a result, much of it never makes its way into library collections, and when it does it is often difficult to make systematically accessible.
Through Open Folklore you can search the gray literature collection of the American Folklore Society, the US-based international professional association for the field of folklore studies. This collection contains a wide variety of useful, but never-formally-published materials.
You can help by contacting us if you publish or have published books and would like help to make them freely available online, or if you have recommendations of books that are already open access or that should be open access.
